Muffins are Ugly Cupcakes

While there are many recipies for many things, the best recipies are for cupcakes. They are muffins with a sickening amount of sugar on them. They are like muffins with fancy hats.  While muffins are the  over proctective hover mothers protecting their “temple” with SPF 90 and wicker garden hats, raising vegan/vegetarian/gluten free/sugar free children in the suburbs; Cupcakes are the ladies in the south, frying bananas and spicing up their gumbo, going to church to compete in the unspoken competition of who has the best hat. Both are good, one is even by far healthier, but if you were to have a party, who would you rather invite?

My friend just got a cupcake book from the library with loads of toppings to make your cupcakes exciting,

I also just recently read through Martha Stewarts Cupcakes

I could feel a sugar high just looking at them.
Here are some examples from each book; First from What’s New, Cupcake? (which, I found out, is a sequel ((YES a COOKBOOK sequel ftw!)) to Hello Cupcake!) My Favourites from this book are the ones that look like other food. There are of course cupcakes that don’t look like other food in the book.

Main Course - Take out Cup Cakes!

Jelly Belly Kernels!

And Pie for Dessert! the "fruit" are smarties 🙂

Martha Stewart’s look a little more classy but just as fun to make!

Candied Hazelnuts

Obviously we had to make some… this is what ours looked like

Too bad thinking about eating that much sugar gives me a headach :/

Well this is Unfortunate…

I remember way back in grade three, one of my old friends had a few Emily the Strange shirts.  I was fascinated by them, which is weird considering it was only a shirt, but the designs were simple and Gothic basically frickin sweet.

Here she is in case you don’t know

  • Emily is a girl who always wears a black dress with black tights and white Mary-Jane shoes.
  • She has four black cats.
  • She is an inventor and has a creepy garden and any other object that is considered ‘strange’.

Unbeknownst to me she was created in the 90’s supposedly based off a sticker and has grown into comic books and young adult novels, (http://www.emilystrange.com) one of which came into the library and made me nearly hyperventilate when I saw it. It is called The Lost Days and is very laugh inducing.

After recently reuniting with a childhood icon I came across some upsetting news. Please enter the following portal and read the post so that I do not have to summarize.
http://youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com/blog3/?p=1701

I read it and so then I was like “WTF?!? oh noooo…” now I feel conflicted because I love the strangeness that is Emily and I want to read all her books and I think the artwork is awesome

BUT  I also read this

http://adamtree.wordpress.com/2009/05/30/cosmic-debris-sues-creators-of-rosamond-the-strange/

Now I’m angry at Mr. Reger. All would have been fine if he had followed his high school english teachers rants on plagiarism but now this brand has the corporate stain of greed*.

Here is a better analysis of the, what Mr. Reger calls “readily distinguishable”, characters http://coffeeghost.net/2006/12/30/emily-the-rip-off/

The up coming movie*** will get hit harder than an iron frying pan to the face because as soon as the trailers release the web’s gonna be all a tizzy with this scandal.
And here I thought she was super awesome 😦

*Use of the word greed is used with the understanding that yes, most corporations that produce a product or brand are doing so to make money and not solely fo the enjoyment of the public.  As such greed should not be read as the average run of the mill money grabbing (formerly explained) but as the ‘this is gonna cost millions if it goes to court you dirty rotten scoundrel ‘ variety

**Further deep thinking on the topic has led me to resolve that the writers of the Emily the Strange books were not trying to rip off Nate the Great’s Rosamond and therefore are still eligible to be read if taken out from the library and not bought directly as then I would be buying directly from the greed* stained brand.  Also as much as I love the plagiarised product I understand if it has to become obsolete.

*** oh and to save you the google time of searching for it, Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl in Kick Ass) will play Emily <- Good choice

Feels Like Morning in Your Eyes

The light that bent around her
now seeps through her
breaking shadows
exposing the gloom
in it she blooms.

She stretches and curves
the colours that burn
disolving the mist with every twist
and now she is left
clear, able and deft.

Standing tall in the colours of fall
then melts purple, black and white
back to colours of night
yet with glimmering silver on her fingers.

Joy Solidified

Seeping out the pages
that recorded all our dreams
The little bubbles danced.

They grew as they collided
and we popped them with our noses
they stuck to our eylashes
As we stared up at the stars.

Who looked back through the sand
ground up to make their glass
which made up all the boxes
That shipped them out to sea.

We caught them in our nets
and grew them in our garden
where the trees used to stand
that now make up
Our books of seeping pages.

Clear as Mud

The wind at first was absent
     then suddenly it came
and through its combing fingers fell
         the first of frozen rain
The clouds they bloomed, they BeLLOWeD, they rolled
insulating the world under a blanket of cold.
And through it, two together, forced through the whirl

They slipped over sidewalks
       and bumped into others,
who were searching for their own, storm chasing lovers
They walked through drifts and jumped over cracked rivers
until finally sensing that something was near
they both looked at the ground and saw something appear
The frost turned to mud which looked such a mess
but again they both knew this was only a test.
They circled & crossed this area of light
and found the beginning of the end of their plight.
for it started out  s  l   o  w  l  y  then grew as they peered
at this answer to questions resulting from fear
The clouds they shrivelled, they fractured, dispersed
allowing warmth to bake the earth, in the echoing silence
from the wind, done with tangles, as it
drifted around while the lovers sat down
     in the low sun
under the tree that grew from their struggles
     and ate their mud pies.

Scene

When I’m writing, I tend to need a song to help me get going.  In this unit, Short Story writing, having my iPod work would be really helpful. Unfortunatly it spased and shut down completely, BUT it was able to play this song (Little Lion Man – Mumford & Sons) on repeat long enough for me to write this scene. It needs work but iPod = dead until I get enough time/remeber to plug it into the computer and clean it up, so feel free to comment and make suggestions!

Scene:

I can feel the warm cement, rough and dry under my bare feet, so different from the cool shade of the Business/Apartment complexes that line the sidewalk on your right. I’m standing beside the empty lot on the corner, a bus stop covered in flyers is to my left. The broken fence is a wall of multicoloured posters, some held on with gum, barely hiding the wild growth of the empty lot. Through a missing plank I can see the remains of a dog house and a chain, vines growing over discarded popcans. Ahead of me, after crossing the road where cars gleam by, the cool shade begins again. The sheets on the cross light beside me flutter in the wind, made by the passing cars and buses, carrying the prevailing smell of exhaust, chinese and fast food restaurants, and the sweet smell of flowers from the florist on the other side of the street, which is feeling the full force of the sun. A few people walk by but it’s not too busy, nice weather for biking, the brave ones taking full advantage of the lack of cars parked along the curb, weaving through, making their own bike lanes.
